The actor, best known for creating characters like Ali G and Borat, will take the role in a film that goes into production next year.
It will deal with the story of Queen up to their seminal performance at Live Aid in 1985. The script is by Peter Morgan (The Queen,Frost/Nixon).
Graham King of production company GK Film said: “Queen is one of the greatest rock bands of all time and a music brand all unto itself. Freddie Mercury was an awe-inspiring performer, so with Sacha in the starring role coupled with Peter’s screenplay and the support of Queen, we have the perfect combination to tell the real story behind their success.”
Presumably the role will give Sacha Baron Cohen the opportunity to wear his ‘mankini’ again…
